We celebrated Newton’s 12th birthday this past week. Yay Noodle!
No big party.
No hats or streamers. No hoopla
What we did have for our beagle’s big day was cake.
A cake that has caused a terrible case of puppy madness. Yes puppy madness. It is a real thing and could happen to your dog too!
Symptoms of puppy madness include but are not limited to: pulling out all the tricks, sad eyes, big ears, endless pawing, lunging toward cake, whining at the refrigerator, uncontrollable bursts of energy and doing laps around the house to get your attention, drooling and of course begging. Endless begging to get more, more, more cake!
What kind of birthday cake can bring this about you ask? Well I’ll tell you. We have discovered that we have some sweet potato hounds in our household. They go bonkers for the yam!
There is still a little cake let in the fridge but once all the cake is gone, SHHHH! quiet they will hear you, they are everywhere listening with their bionic puppy ears! Things will settle back down but for now we are just trying to cope with this affliction.
In my humble opinion as a human cake, meh, I’ve had much better. But I can not stress enough the madness that this little birthday dessert has caused. You might think it silly but I was secretly thrilled that of all snacks they love, none have come close to this reaction.
So if you think your dogs digestive system can handle it why not give it a try. My dogs can handle human food for the most part without any unfortunate bathroom incidents but not all dogs can so please use your best judgement. Also, this recipe calls for carob chips which DO NOT contain chocolate. DO NOT substitute with chocolate chips which can be fatal to dogs. Thank you!
Happy Birthday Newton! My sweet little old man!
Sweet Potato Cake w/ Carob Chips and Peanut Butter Cream Cheese Frosting
ingredients
2 + 1/2 cups cooked and mashed sweet potatoes. (about 2 larger potatoes)
1/2 butter – room temperature
2 + 1/2 cups flour
3/4 teaspoons baking powder
1 + 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 eggs
1/4 cup water
1 cup carob chips (optional and DO NOT USE CHOCOLATE CHIPS)
4 oz cream cheese – softened
1/2 cup peanut butter
Grease and lightly flour a 9 x 13 rectangle baking pan. Preheat oven 350 degrees.
In an electric mixer beat butter for about 30 seconds. Add sweet potatoes, flour, baking soda and baking powder. Mix until combined. Add eggs and water. Once combined fold in carob chips if using. Pour batter into prepared pan and bake for about 30 minutes or until tester comes out clean.
For frosting add the cream cheese and peanut butter in an electric mixer and combine. Easy peasy! Spread on cool cake and let the madness begin! Enjoy!
*If no celebration is in order you can just cut up the cake into snack size squares and put in the fridge, no icing needed. That’s what I did with half the cake and the boys went nutzo for those too.

Dog cake, love it!
