Telecommunications revenues are also a hurdle.

“Such low tariffs also lead to poor network quality. If companies can improve the latter, then in all likelihood customers will be willing to pay more. As one of the main sources of income for telecom operators is affected, the move to new infrastructure so soon after the introduction of 4G networks in India - which also required infrastructural changes - will not induce companies to buy new hardware in the near future.

"5G can be an answer to these concerns as it offers higher speeds and more bandwidth, but it also requires the allocation of new bands - and requires additional infrastructural changes that require a financial investment," said Denis NG, Director - Marketing and Infrastructure.
