Critical path method and PERT charts

By combining the critical path method and PERT charts, you can redesign your project management to ensure realistic deadlines and process flows. Present your project in a PERT diagram and in the last step use the CPM to estimate the time it takes to complete your tasks. When creating a PERT chart, give rough estimates for each task or scenario. You should estimate both the longest and shortest possible time each activity is likely to take. You should even consider delays and estimate the longest possible duration in case there is the possibility of setbacks.

Once you've organized your project tasks and applied their estimated durations, create a PERT chart that incorporates these estimates.

In this example we have created a PERT chart with eight tasks, with each task having a different duration (length).

After identifying the various path options with their respective time frames, we realize that the most critical paths are A and G as they take the longest. In addition, several other tasks are dependent on Path A, which delays the estimated time to complete.

Now we have the opportunity to take a closer look at the processes of the individual tasks in order to identify areas that could possibly be shortened or to estimate exactly how long the process will still take from a certain point in time.

When planning your project, try to apply the critical path method to your PERT charts. This allows you to convince yourself of the realistic expectations and deadlines that this method offers.
