It is defined by a mathematical coordinate transformation from an associated RGB color space. Areas of application of YCbCr

The color model was originally made for digital television according to the PAL standard and is now also used for NTSC digital television. The MPEG compression used on DVDs, digital television, and video CDs is encoded in YCbCr. Digital camcorders output the color space over a digital connection such as FireWire or SDI. The color model also offers advantages in color subsampling by reducing the file size of the images. For example, a 512 x 512 image is 600 KB in size.
