Will college transfers affect my student loans?
How does a change of university work?
Change of university with the same degree program: The most important information about changing the place of study
If you do not want to drop out of your studies but want to continue in another location, this is called a change of university. There are many reasons why someone decides to go to a new university. Even though the Bologna process made study programs comparable across Europe and thus makes it easier to change universities, there are a number of things that you should take into account. That is why we have put together the most important information about changing universities here.
Crediting of the achievements
If you are planning to continue your studies at another university, you usually do not want to lose any time and have your achievements recognized so far. Often that is also possible. However, module plans vary and it cannot always be guaranteed that you will not lose any credit points. For example, if your new university of choice does not offer modules that you have taken at your current university, the points can only be credited in exceptional cases. In addition, the crediting process is associated with a relatively large amount of administrative effort, for which you should allow yourself enough time. The first point of contact is usually the academic advisor. It is customary for you to send him your performance certificates and associated module descriptions and receive a credit transfer notice. The actual crediting can only be done after your enrollment at the examination office of your new university.
Same name = same course of study?
If you change university, you should read the course of the modules and the description of the course at your future university carefully. The same course name does not always actually mean the same course. This phenomenon also works the other way around: The names for a degree program can vary, while the contents of the degree overlap strongly. To be on the safe side, you can call the general student advisory service or the academic advisor.
It is important, however, that you bear in mind that a change to a related subject is usually handled as a change of degree, not as a change of university.
Application deadlines and admission limits
You can usually only change universities at the beginning of a semester. It is completely different whether and to what extent there are approval limits. It is not uncommon for a course of study with restricted admission in the first semester to work in a higher semester without special admission restrictions. If your desired course of study is also restricted in admission in the higher semester, you must find out how exactly the selection process is regulated.
Application deadlines for students changing universities are just as variable. But because at many universities and technical colleges you need a credit transfer notice before applying or enrolling, it is important to ensure that all formalities are complied with in good time.
Finances: BAföG, student loan and Co.
Depending on how you finance your studies, you have to think about your student loan, your scholarship or your BAföG funding when changing university. The general rule for the latter is that a change of university has no effect as long as you graduate within the standard period of study. However, a new BAföG office is connected to the new place of study, to which you now have to send your applications. Due to the processing times, this may mean that further funding is not delayed. In any case, a plan B is advisable, after all, you could fall behind due to non-creditable performance and exceed the standard period of study.
It is not possible to say in general what the specific regulations for student loans and scholarships look like. At KFW, for example, a maximum funding period is set. After the 6th semester at the university, you must not fail to present proof of performance with a certain number of credit points. The best thing to do is to check with your lender or your scholarship foundation as early as possible!
The apartment search
In addition to organizing all university-related things, you of course also have to take care of a place to stay at your new place of study. In principle, the same applies as before your first degree: Each type of living has its advantages and disadvantages. Now you have another chance to reflect on whether you prefer the cheap dormitory, the hustle and bustle of a shared flat or the quiet of your own apartment.

The prices for living space vary greatly depending on where you live. Especially when moving to a more expensive region, you have to deal with how you can cover the costs.
New university structures
Every university has its own characteristics. This includes, for example, very different organizational processes. How do you register for courses and exams, which computer services are used, how does library lending work - these are just a few of the questions that will come up at the new university. Because everything will be a little different than at your previous place of study, you don't have to be afraid to speak to your fellow students and ask for advice.
A new university and a new place of residence - when you change university you will have an interesting, exciting, but also exhausting time! Because you primarily meet people who have been living in an environment that is new to you for a long time, you should take time to make new social contacts. University groups in particular offer an ideal opportunity to do so. But student parties or cultural events are also good for starting a conversation and getting to know new people quickly.
