Who is Gucci Mane
In 2008 rap from the south of America has long since established itself: Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter III" is considered by many to be the album of the year, Young Jeezy with Autotune and Jay-Z provides the unofficial presidential anthem "My President Is Black" and TIs purging from Gangsters to do-gooders is the number one topic of conversation on MTV and CNN.
The underground is still seething in Dirty South. His new superstar there goes by the name Gucci Mane and rises from the streets of Atlanta. The boy, who was born as Radric Davis on February 12, 1980, moves there at a young age together with his mother. He previously grew up in Birmigham, Alabama. Radric wrote poetry when he was a child. He got the idea of rapping this when he was around 14.
Before "Icy", the collaboration with the up-and-coming trap rapper Young Jeezy, grows from a local hit to a national success tune in 2005 and the two subsequently get into trouble about the authorship of the idea, text and hook, Gucci has Mane First experiences with sifted air: In 2001 he went behind bars for the first (and by no means the last) time because of drug possession.
Whether the unexpected success with "Icy" calls Neider on the scene, whether one of Gucci's love affairs provides the occasion for Handel or whether it is simply a break-in: everyone tells the story differently. Fact: Gucci Mane gets caught in a robbery and shoots one of the five armed perpetrators. Self-defense, so his interpretation.
The police still issue an arrest warrant against him. The rapper found out about it on a promotional tour in New York, voluntarily surrendered to justice and ended up in jail. The arrest comes very inappropriate for his career plans. Gucci Mane has only just established itself as a mixtape supplier.
With a voice like after an almond operation, he nudges his way into the playlist of hip-hop heads without being an extraordinary rapper. He doesn’t turn out to be a particularly shrewd interview partner, and he is hardly networked with the big names in the industry: basically, very poor prerequisites.
The frequency of his mixtape releases just seems scary and his swagger is out of this world. Gucci repeatedly proves his talent for entertaining hooks and not exactly profound, but captivating songs. His perkiness also appears phenomenal even in the genre context that is usually properly inflated.
Of course, that doesn't help the rapper much when he has to spend six months in custody. Fortunately for him, the court did not find enough evidence to counter the defendant's declaration of self-defense. Gucci is released and continues to work diligently on his career.
In 2005 Gucci Mane released the album "Trap House", the first sequel with "Back To The Trap House" in 2007 and growing into a whole series over the years. Nevertheless, it is never enough to achieve a real box office hit. His album sales level off at around 150,000 units, and he owes the lion's share of his success to his mixtape business.
This release policy does not immediately bring millions, but respect. Gucci is building its reputation as the people's gangster rapper. However, the emphasis is still on gangsters: Time and again, Gucci Mane is arrested, locked away, released and arrested again.
He is guilty of illegal drug and gun possession, is hacked for insulting officials and bodily harm, and finds numerous ways to repeatedly violate his probation requirements. In 2008, for example, he went back to prison because he only worked 25 of the 600 hours of community service imposed on him.
In 2009 Warner signed Gucci Mane, made an album title out of the state and threw "The State Vs. Radric Davis" among the people in the same year. After his release, Gucci renames his own label, once So Icey Entertainment, to 1017 Brick Squad Records.
From jail to the studio and back: Gucci Mane kept this rhythm in the following years. In between he actually stays at large long enough to make his debut as an actor in "Birds Of A Feather" in 2012. In 2013 he followed up in "Spring Breakers".
Several solo albums, collaborative works and countless mixtapes, but also countless insults that were snapped up on Twitter to colleagues and many, many arrests later, at Warner's apparently fed up with Gucci's antics. Despite apologies and assurances that it was Codeine who spoke from his tweets, he has to publish "The State Vs. Radric Davis II: The Caged Bird Sings" without a major behind him.
From mid-2014 to 2016, Gucci Mane is sitting - surprise! - once again in jail. Obviously, this has long had no effect on his productivity. Hardly at large again, 2016 is "Everybody Looking", which some celebrated as a classic when it was released.
After all, the album contains a line that also aptly characterizes Gucci's work: "Fuck the feds, fuck the police, fuck the DEA, I can't even sleep I got so much to say.“Obviously he can be locked up again and again, but silenced? No chance.
