Steps to bathe a puppy
When your pup comes home for the first time, it will be beneficial to give him a bath so he can make his new experience fresh and clean. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to bathe your puppy without unnecessary complications:
- Place the puppy on a table.
The table must be specially designed for this task. Placing the puppy in this elevated, unfamiliar location will help him understand that you are not playing. This will help you manage bath time safely and comfortably. Put a towel on the table to make sure your puppy doesn't slip off. It also absorbs excess water.
- Brush your puppy gently.
Before you start bathing, start brushing your puppy slowly as this will calm him down. Simple movements with a suitable brush will also remove the dirt from the fur. Brush your dog to remove tangles, nodules, and foreign objects.
- Turn on the hair dryer.
Leave the hair dryer near the table so that your puppy can get used to the noises made by the device. The idea is to get your puppy used to this situation while having a positive and joyful experience.
- Lift your puppy into the bathtub.
Put your pup in a decent container or dog / puppy bathtub that should be in the bathtub.
- Wash the puppy with warm water.
Wash the puppy. Use the shower head and warm water for this. Always make sure that it is not too hot or too cold. Indoors or outdoors, use comfortably lukewarm water and let it run until it reaches your dog's knee height. Do not overfill the tub as this can cause your dog to panic.
- Prepare the shampoo.
Prepare the puppy shampoo by mixing it with water. Then distribute the shampoo evenly on the fur with a soft sponge, paying attention to the eyes. During the puppy bath, use a jug or spray bottle to moisten the fur and apply a small amount of shampoo. Always read the label as some shampoos need to be diluted while other shampoos need to sit for a few minutes. Lather your puppy's entire body, including its tail, underside, and neck, taking special care to leave out the eyes and ears.
- Start scrubbing gently
Scrubbing not only washes and massages the puppy, but also gets him used to the procedure.
It is important to rinse the fur thoroughly to remove all of the shampoo once you have finished bathing your pup. To do this, hold the shower head in one hand or use a jug of warm, clean water and with the other hand hold a cloth to protect your eyes and ears. If your dog has wrinkles on its face or long, drooping ears, it is better to use baby wipes or a damp cloth without excess water and definitely without soap to clean them. You may need to clean the folds of skin regularly, including daily, with a damp cloth.
Continue to drying! When you both get out of the bathtub, your puppy will automatically want to shake himself. Your bathroom might get a little wet, but it's her instinctive way of getting rid of most of the water. When your puppy has done this, begin vigorous towel drying. Meanwhile, lay him on his stomach and hold him still with one hand to make your puppy feel safe. Use warm air with a blow dryer to dry the fur, starting with the tail, so as not to frighten it. Avoid blowing air directly onto your nose and ears. Make sure your puppy is thoroughly dry, especially around the back and under the legs.
- to brush
Once you've finished bathing and drying your puppy, put him back on the table for a few seconds, brush and stroke him.
Finally, give your puppy a treat as a reward!
Bathing tips for puppies:
- Make sure that the blow dryer doesn't get too close to the puppy's skin, that it isn't pointed at the eyes, and that the airflow is warm but not hot.
- When dogs get wet, their natural response is to roll and rub their head, neck, and body on any available ground, including grass. To prevent them from getting dirty again, put some dog towels on the bathroom floor or lawn and encourage your pup to use these instead.
- Small and thin breeds get cold easily, so keep your puppy in a warm room until he is completely dry.
- It is very important to rinse off the shampoo and / or conditioner thoroughly as residue can make it itchy or dry.
- Clean the inner ears with a special ear cleaner (available at pet stores or your veterinarian), but never insert anything into their ear canals like cotton or a cotton swab.
- If your dog is showing signs of nervousness, especially if it is their first bath together, give them plenty of praise and reassurance.
How do you get your puppy used to the hair dryer?
If your puppy's fur is very long or thick it can take a surprisingly long time to dry, so you may want to use a blow dryer. Hairdryers can be pretty scary for a dog, so calm them down and reward good behavior.
If your puppy needs their hair dried but is not used to it, start getting used to it at a young age. To begin with, just use the blow dryer to make noise in the room before bringing it closer to the dog with much more comforting encouragement.
