Used graphics cards: These models are worthwhile

Friedrich Stiemer

The prices for graphics cards have been rising to astronomical heights for months, especially for current models from AMD and Nvidia. The used graphics cards are now also affected, some of which cost as much as when they were launched on the market. We have researched for you which models are still halfway worthwhile.

Saving tip for full HD gamers

With a little luck, you can get used graphics cards with Geforce GTX 970 on Ebay for around 100 euros. The cards only have 4 GB of video memory and are therefore not a long-term, but a comparatively inexpensive solution - until the market relaxes again at the end of 2021.

The hardware market is upside down: Graphics cards are experiencing immense price increases that only make you shake your head. In particular, current graphics cards from the RX-6000 series from AMD or the RTX-3000 series from Nvidia are at an almost limitless price level. In March 2021, a used Radeon RX 6900 XT will be traded on Ebay for around 1,300 euros (RRP at market launch: 999 euros), and a Geforce RTX 3090 for over 2,000 euros (RRP at market launch: 1,499 euros). We have listed why this is so in a separate article: "6 reasons: This is why graphics cards are so expensive"

Used graphics cards are also becoming more expensive

Briefly summarized the current market situation in terms of graphics cards: The demand is immense, the factories cannot keep up with production, logistics have become more expensive, punitive tariffs are increasing prices, scalpers are buying up all stocks and the crypto-mining hype is reviving. Ideally, you should simply not buy a graphics card at the moment and be patient. But if you absolutely need one because the old one is defective, you either have to be very lucky and have a large wallet, or you can buy a used graphics card that offers just enough performance so that it lasts for a certain period of time, until you get it the GPU of choice can grow at reasonable prices. What was hardly a problem a few months ago is now slowly becoming one. Because prices are also slowly rising for used graphics cards.

Test winner: Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 In our test, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 proves to be the fastest graphics card at the moment, making it our new test winner. With its generous storage capacity of 24 GB GDDR6X video memory and a proud RRP of 1499 euros, the RTX 3090 is aimed less at gamers and more at creative people who need a lot of VRAM for their applications. In addition, the GPU also provides enough computing power to be able to display all current game titles with ray tracing with at least 60 FPS in 4K resolution. Current price point: from 1649 euros
Our model recommendation: ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 3090

Sellers of old graphics cards smell profit

The direct previous generations of graphics cards are usually much cheaper, which should be logical. Because the new models are more powerful and often offer more or new functions. But in March 2021, used graphics cards of the Geforce RTX 20 and Radeon RX 5000 series are outrageously expensive, sometimes over 800 euros will be due - for models that were brand new and already cost less than 500 euros at the market launch. We therefore currently advise you to stay away from the direct predecessor graphics cards, as the cards sometimes cost as much as the new generation models.

These used graphics cards are currently worthwhile

So we're going back a generation, to the GTX 10 and Radeon RX 500 series.
