When did TikTok become popular?

TikTok: the app simply explained

The free app TikTok has existed since 2016. Initially, the app was mainly popular in China, where it still exists under the name "Douyin". In 2017, Douyin also took off in the western world, but only under the name musical.ly, a year later the app was given its current name TikTok.

  • TikTok is a social network similar to Instagram. Instead of pictures, however, short, self-made videos are accompanied by music. There is often dancing or singing along with it.
  • Meanwhile, TikTok is no longer just about music and dance. News, fashion and comedy are also big topics on TikTok.
  • The predecessor of TikTok was called Musical.ly, the app had existed since 2014 and was especially popular in the western world. After Douyin started with a very similar concept in China, Musical.ly was bought by the Chinese company for one billion US dollars and merged with Douyin. In the western world, Musical.ly has been called TikTok since then.
  • In the summer of 2020, Donald Trump wanted to ban TikTok in the USA. The reason for this was the Chinese company's lack of data protection. With the end of Trump's term in office, the situation had eased again. Due to the impending ban, you could not use TikTok without an account for a long time, and registration is no longer required.
  • TikTok has been one of the most popular apps in app stores for years. Alternatively, you can also use TikTok on your PC. You can now also find clothes in the TikTok look online.
