Introduction

Oil is one of the most important bulk commodities. In 1954, world oil production was around 680,754,000 t. The United States accounted for 3 I I 800,000 t and Germany for 2,690,000 t. The world's energy generation is based on 45% coal, 35% oil, 13.4% natural gas, and 6% hydro electricity. 60 million motor vehicles, all of aviation, more than half of all ships and others. m. depend on fuels that are produced from crude oil or natural gas. At the top of the oil producing countries is the United States of America with 46%. There are enormous reserves of oil in the Middle East. The Far East, Australia and Mrika only produce very small amounts in outlying areas. The uneven distribution of crude oil is due to the origin of crude oil in rocks, which only form under special conditions. Anyone who wants to assume that oil can form under all conditions will have to explain why so many areas are lacking. The search for oil continues into ever more remote areas and into ever greater depths; it is getting more and more expensive. Any aid that makes it possible to avoid unnecessary drilling must be welcome. Every discovered relationship between petroleum and rock can lead to new discoveries. Deposits and geochemistry teach us to recognize such relationships. To pursue these traces with all scientific means can be of extraordinary importance in practice.
