blueberry lemon

So I’ve been a bit scattered as of late.  I just can’t seem to get into a schedule pattern that I can maintain.

Why you ask?

Well, I’ll tell you since you seem insistent on an answer.

I’ve joined a roller derby league!  It is so much fun.

Don’t get me wrong, right now I stink.  I thought I knew how to roller skate, wrong.  I stink but that’s okay.

As Adam says, I’m learning.  So wise that one, I think I’ll keep him.

Down side, it’s two hours away. Boo!  So that means I have a marathon day once a week where I work for 10 hours, drive two hours to practice, practice for two hours, drive home for two hours and then tell Adam all about my day.  Oh this isn’t a complaint, as long as it’s fun I’ll keep doing it but I’m afraid I haven’t balanced out the rest of my week.  Things keep getting pushed back.

I don’t do all of my other exercises, meal planning is a bit off and I haven’t been able to tell you all about this cake I made.  Well bear with me.  I’m getting there. I don’t like when I don’t have a regular schedule so this little disorder should be temporary.

Meanwhile I made you this cake.  It’s lemony. It’s blueberry-ey.  I used this icing.  You should make this, it should get you in the spring state of mind.

newton & blueberry lemon cake

Hi friends!

I’ve missed you.

I’ve been busy, sort of.

I’ve had a bit of a change to my schedule that I’m still working out and that has made me a bit out of sorts.

It’s all worth it..I think.  I’m being bold and brave.  The whole purpose of this blog so I’m sure you understand.

But I have missed you.

I made you (and my husband who is my biggest supporter..swoon!) a cake.

As you can tell it is beagle approved.  I’ll post the recipe real soon.

Do you see him?

Just waiting for his moment to pounce…bad beagle.

Thanks for all the kindness.

Have a fantastic day!

sweetpotato cake

We celebrated Newton’s 12th birthday this past week.  Yay Noodle!

No big party.

No hats or streamers.  No hoopla

What we did have for our beagle’s big day was cake.

A cake that has caused a terrible case of puppy madness.  Yes puppy madness.  It is a real thing and could happen to your dog too!

Symptoms of puppy madness include but are not limited to:  pulling out all the tricks, sad eyes, big ears, endless pawing, lunging toward cake, whining at the refrigerator, uncontrollable bursts of energy and doing laps around the house to get your attention, drooling and of course begging.  Endless begging to get more, more, more cake!

What kind of birthday cake can bring this about you ask?  Well I’ll tell you. We have discovered that we have some sweet potato hounds in our household.  They go bonkers for the yam!

pistachio butter cake

So yesterday, almost two weeks into 2013 my husband and I attended our last Christmas dinner/celebration.  Yes, you heard/read me correctly.  The holidays are still trying to go strong here even though we are trying our darndest to move on.

Sure our lights are still up but we have stopped turning them on plus it finally turned super cold here and neither of us wants to be outside if we don’t have to be.

But none the less we still celebrated Christmas 2012 with my mom who had spent the holidays at my Sister’s in California with her human grandchildren as if three dogs aren’t good enough to be considered grandchildren and maybe some people aren’t sure if they want kids and are very happy with their lives as is and that is an argument for another time.

It’s the holidays plus a few weeks so smile and get through this.  Anyway I brought cake.  A fantastic cake.  A cake that will be made again and again and you really need to make.  I’m not just saying it because I’m now re-holiday stress eating or that I have a love of pistachios that may just rival my olive, bread and blueberry addiction.  (Maybe not rival the bread or blueberries but def the olives, maybe I have a salt problem?  Again, something to work through at a later date.

Anyway the cake was a huge hit.  It is lite and fluffy and the chocolate so decadent.  You just have to make it for your next event or next event plus 3 weeks.

kugelhopf 5

I don’t mean to alarm you but I have a bit of possible scandalous information to just get out here in the open.  Maybe scandalous is the wrong word.

Ready?  O.k. deep breath.  It has been said  and I won’t name names (my husband) that I seem far more excited about the nearing of season 3 of Downton Abbey than of Christmas.

What?  That’s crazy. I love Christmas time and the lights and the cookies and the joy and oh my gosh he may be right.  That Mrs. Bates was horrible.  And the Dowager Countess of Grantham, I die, she cracks me up.

Apparently it has been said that whenever an episode is on PBS lately I will turn it on no matter if it just started or it’s in the middle or I just watched it.   That may or may not be true.

Okay it is true and I’m not ashamed.  It’s like a little winter treat for a few Sundays out of the year and I’m just prepping for it.

It doesn’t mean I’m not excited about Christmas.  All the cookies eaten should be proof enough of my joy for the season.

My second bit of news had to do with this Apple-Raisin Kugelhopf.  This delicious cake/sweet briochey (is that a word) bread.  My husband had two pieces, not because he didn’t enjoy it but because in no time flat I finished it.  Yeah it was that good.  Plain, but even better toasted with a little butter.  Swoon!  I could not be stopped and because it is the holidays and I AM looking forward to them I don’t dare try to.  I just put a few more soups and salads on the dinner menu.  Mrs. Patmore would approve, maybe. She might just yell at me!
