pistachio butter cake

So yesterday, almost two weeks into 2013 my husband and I attended our last Christmas dinner/celebration.  Yes, you heard/read me correctly.  The holidays are still trying to go strong here even though we are trying our darndest to move on.

Sure our lights are still up but we have stopped turning them on plus it finally turned super cold here and neither of us wants to be outside if we don’t have to be.

But none the less we still celebrated Christmas 2012 with my mom who had spent the holidays at my Sister’s in California with her human grandchildren as if three dogs aren’t good enough to be considered grandchildren and maybe some people aren’t sure if they want kids and are very happy with their lives as is and that is an argument for another time.

It’s the holidays plus a few weeks so smile and get through this.  Anyway I brought cake.  A fantastic cake.  A cake that will be made again and again and you really need to make.  I’m not just saying it because I’m now re-holiday stress eating or that I have a love of pistachios that may just rival my olive, bread and blueberry addiction.  (Maybe not rival the bread or blueberries but def the olives, maybe I have a salt problem?  Again, something to work through at a later date.

Anyway the cake was a huge hit.  It is lite and fluffy and the chocolate so decadent.  You just have to make it for your next event or next event plus 3 weeks.

candied citrus peel 6Oh Heavens!

This was not the way it was to play out.  I was not to be overwhelmed by another holiday season.  I was to be on top of my game. I’m just coming out of some sort of cookie coma and instead of clinking glasses with you all having an easy breezy festive season I was in some sort harried whirlwind, albeit an enjoyable one.

But not to dwell, it happens and instead of kicking myself for not getting this or anything to you before the New Year I will share it now.  Citrus is good anytime during the cold winter months and as soon as I had seen these on Shutterbean’s site a few weeks ago I knew I wanted to try my hand at them.  It went with my desire to make fancy candies and why not stand out in late January? You can be the office hero bringing snacks into the employee lounge after all the free food from Christmas is long gone but that need for an afternoon sugar fix has not.

Yay 2013!!  We can do this!

This week has been a full one and it is far from over.

It involved some steamy citrus peels.

Happy Friday

Happy Friday Folks!

Are we all ready for this final dash to Christmas?

Don’t stress out, I’m nowhere near ready.

Let’s just try to enjoy it and what gets done, gets done and what doesn’t…oops!

Now I must go and make more cookies and then try not to shovel them all into my face.

Have a fantastic day everyone!

kugelhopf 5

I don’t mean to alarm you but I have a bit of possible scandalous information to just get out here in the open.  Maybe scandalous is the wrong word.

Ready?  O.k. deep breath.  It has been said  and I won’t name names (my husband) that I seem far more excited about the nearing of season 3 of Downton Abbey than of Christmas.

What?  That’s crazy. I love Christmas time and the lights and the cookies and the joy and oh my gosh he may be right.  That Mrs. Bates was horrible.  And the Dowager Countess of Grantham, I die, she cracks me up.

Apparently it has been said that whenever an episode is on PBS lately I will turn it on no matter if it just started or it’s in the middle or I just watched it.   That may or may not be true.

Okay it is true and I’m not ashamed.  It’s like a little winter treat for a few Sundays out of the year and I’m just prepping for it.

It doesn’t mean I’m not excited about Christmas.  All the cookies eaten should be proof enough of my joy for the season.

My second bit of news had to do with this Apple-Raisin Kugelhopf.  This delicious cake/sweet briochey (is that a word) bread.  My husband had two pieces, not because he didn’t enjoy it but because in no time flat I finished it.  Yeah it was that good.  Plain, but even better toasted with a little butter.  Swoon!  I could not be stopped and because it is the holidays and I AM looking forward to them I don’t dare try to.  I just put a few more soups and salads on the dinner menu.  Mrs. Patmore would approve, maybe. She might just yell at me!
